This week I started a new sample beat which is going to be one of my last beats I create in this project. I wanted to use everything I have learned and compare it to one of the first beats I made to see how much I have progressed. I did not complete my goal of finishing the beat because I decided it was not up to my standards yet. I want this work to reflect what I have gained from learning about this subject. When I started, I did not know much, but now I have taught myself how to do so much more with the music I am working with. Mr. Harding was also a huge help in my learning of how to navigate things in GarageBand and do what I want with all different sorts of music. I hope to finish and share this sample beat next week. This week I worked purely on finishing my podcast up. Last week I had created the background music, intro music, and wrote a script. This week I was focused on recording the actual podcast and putting it all together. I made this podcast about something I am passionate about, so it was not hard for me to figure out what I wanted to talk about and contribute into the podcast. One challenge I encountered was creating the music and putting it in the right places. This was hard for me because I usually just create songs and have never had to work with words on top of it. It took a lot of playing around with the background music and volume levels to figure out how I wanted it to sound. I also used a sound affect of jungle noises in the background in spots were there was no music because I did not like how it sounded with just my voice talking. I am proud of the way this podcast turned out and believe this will help me create new types of music because of everything I learned while creating it. Click read more to hear the finished podcast.
This week I started a podcast. I believe this will help me to create music by helping me learn new tools I can use when starting my last final full beat next week. I practiced using sound effects and lining them up with different parts of the podcast to give each part of it a different feel. This was tough at first because timing the effects with what me and others are saying in the podcast was tricky and hard to get right on point. I have not finished the podcast yet, but have created an intro song using my own instruments, wrote a script, and played around with effects I can use. I plan to hopefully finish the podcast this week. It is about one of my favorite subjects and I am excited to see how it turns out because I have never made one before. I do not have a picture of my progress with the intro music or effects because it is on a school computer, but click read more to see a screenshot of my script that I will be recording this week.
During the course of this week I have learned a lot. I continued working on my sample beat that I started last week, and added many things to it. I wanted to be able to use instruments that I am not all that familiar with to make it sound different and learn about which instruments sound good together. I did this by adding an erhu. This is an instrument I am definitely not familiar with at all. I have never really used it, besides in prerecorded loops on GarageBand, so I was eager to see what I could create with it. I really enjoy the beat I created this week because it is original and very different from many beats I have made in the past. One obstacle I faced was using the erhu since this was new to me, and it took me a while to figure out which chord progression and melody to use for it. Overall, I am proud of this new song I made and now am able to use even more tools and instruments than I ever have before. Click read more to hear the complete sample song.
I have accomplished a lot this week. I reached both of my goals being to finish the arrangement I started last week, and also starting a new sample beat. The. arrangement I made was basically a remix of the Super Mario Bros theme song. It started off as just piano chords I got off the internet, but after adding drums, bass, keyboards, and synthesizers, it sounds brand new. I am very proud of this remix and cannot wait to share it with people to get feedback. I have not worked a lot with song arrangements, so I was very surprised and pleased when I started figuring out how to make it sound different, while still keeping characteristics of the original song. Once I finished this arrangement, I started working on a new sample beat. I wanted to create this one to strengthen my skills in using my own instruments. On the iPad, GarageBand allows for you to play the instruments any way you want. So far I have came up with a chord progression and added a few instruments, but it definitely still needs a lot of work. I plan. to finish this sample beat next week hopefully! This week my goals were to start a new arrangement beat. An arrangement is when you take a song that has already been made and rearrange, add things, and cut up the original to make something brand new. I love doing this because it is fun to make something of your own, while still using songs you are familiar with. I got to manipulate the super Mario brothers theme song to make it sound completely different. I had trouble trying to line things up and make sure they sound good when putting them together, and it took a lot of trial and error. I overcame this by choosing tracks that have the same rhythm and flow so they work well when put together. I am not done with this beat yet, but I definitely will be next week! I am excited to hear the final product. Click read more to see a screenshot of my progress with the super Mario beat.
This week I accomplished my goal of finishing my full beat that I have been working on. I used all the skills I have learned from myself, YouTube, and Mr. Harding to create this beat. It was challenging for me to pick a melody that fit with the tone of the song, and it was also a little difficult for me to pick what drums and drum patterns I wanted to use. This song is comprised of sample loops and my own instruments that I played onto the track. I am so glad I finally finished this project and am excited to get feedback on it. I think I did a good job at making this song sound different from the rest that I have made in the past. It is unique and a different style than I usually make. This week I had a lot to work on. My goals were to finish the sample beat I started last week, and to make progress on my final beat. I accomplished both of these goals as I have completed the sample, and made so much progress on my final beat. The sample beat I have created is very different from the music I usually make. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try something new to keep my skills sharp and be able to use new sounds. I used instruments I thought I would never use, such as the erhu, which really opened my mind up to new possibilities for other songs. One of the challenges I faced this week was how to end my sample beat. I was unsure how to go about this before playing around with a bunch of possibilities and finally coming to the conclusion that fading it out would be the best option. My full beat is really starting to come together, and it should hopefully be done by the end of next week! I am very excited to share how my sample beat turned out, and to finish my full beat. This week I made a lot of progress. I wanted to make a new sample beat that was unlike the type of music I usually tend to make. My reason for this was to be able to expand my knowledge and get more practice with techniques I might not use as often, so I could use those techniques more confidently in my full beat. I have also made a little progress on my full beat. Most of the struggle on the full beat is not knowing which sounds to use together. It takes a lot of trial and error, but that is how I am continuing to learn. I have not finished the sample beat yet, but I will next week. This song is very unlike anything I have created before and so far I am very proud of it. Click read more to see a screenshot of the sample beat I put together this week.
This week my main goal was to add more of a variety to my music and beats. I accomplished this by using some new tracks and sample packs that Mr. Harding was kind enough to share with me. The packs included everything from loops, drums, and guitars, to bass, voice affects, and vocals. This gave me a brand new opportunity to push myself even farther and really explore the different types of music I want to work with. These new packs really opened my mind to new ideas, I am even thinking about trying something totally new and restarting my whole full beat to create something even different than I am used to. I encountered a challenge this week, which was trying to trim the sample packs to the perfect length, because a lot of them were too long or short to end at the end of a 4 beat. This was difficult to do because whenever I would cut them and try to loop them, it would sound choppy. I overcame this obstacle by playing around with each of the tracks a lot and finally making them flow. I am so grateful for these new sounds to use in my music and cannot wait to see what I create with them.
